My travel Self-tape kit
Tried & Tested
From Malaysia to Myrtle Beach to Budapest and beyond, this kit (or similar items) has gone the distance. It fits in a carry-on, sets up in minutes and won’t blow your budget. Also great for content creation on-the-go.
Camera
Your phone or tablet. Rear camera is usually higher quality but you’re filming yourself, fine to use the front camera so you can see your framing. Great if you can control the camera remotely, like with an iWatch and iPhone, or a third-party bluetooth remote.
Tripod
The Ulanzi 63” 160cm Selfie Stick & Tripod with a bluetooth remote is my favourite travel tripod! It’s the most compact, lightweight, easy to use and versatile one I’ve owned. The phone holder has a cold shoe mount for one light, or even a lightweight video rig attachment. I attach a small LED light like the Ulanzi VL49. Note: may be a little unstable if you film with a tablet as it’s lightweight.
Lights
Soft natural light from a big window is best, but if that’s not possible, I use a small LED light like the Ulanzi VL49 dimmable video light. Super packable! I attach it to my Ulanzi tripod phone holder (above) with a cold shoe mount. Or you could use a lightweight 10” Ring Light with Tripod Stand & Phone Holder.
Sound
The Røde VideoMic Me-C compact directional smartphone mic for USB-C devices. There are versions with other ports if needed. It’s better than the phone’s mic, but if there’s a lot of background noise you may have to clean up the sound in your video editor. Also, to hear playback after recording you’ll need to remove the mic from the USB-C port.
Backdrop
A grey Fleece Travel Blanket. Lightweight, compact, perfect colour, doesn’t wrinkle and dual purpose! Good size for close-ups, medium close-ups, maybe a mid-shot. For full length you’ll see the wall/room behind you but that’s OK. Tape it gently to the wall with a couple pieces of Duck Tape Mini Roll - should be safe for paint. Thanks to DaJuan Johnson of Think Bigger Coaching for the blanket tip!
Accessories
Universal Travel Adapter with 2 USB-A and 3 USB-C ports - a must-have
Power Bank with built-in cables x 4 - I use this all the time when travelling and can’t easily get to an outlet. Super convenient.
Extra Long USB-C Cable for charging your device while filming
